GALVAN: Power Knits Collection
It can be argued that “knitting is coding”. Using certain sequencing you can create shape, texture and pattern - an algorithm. There are a wide variety of knit symbols, and knitting patterns themselves can be as intricate as the garments. I wanted to use knit code as a foundation to explore the power knits collection.
Galvan’s aesthetic is rooted in structure, geometry and metals. In addition to knit coding, I also explored architectural influences that mirrored Galvan’s core principles including the Breton Brut style. A fusion of juxtapositions - curve and line, softness and precision - designs of unexpected pairings coming together to create something stronger. This research helped shape my thinking for composition and the overall aesthetic of the campaign. Taking my own photographs from local surroundings, I also found ways to layer this influence into the visuals.
I started by exploring knitting maps - in particular the rib knit and then curated a set of codes used in the production process of this knit, using these as a foundation to inspire designs for a bespoke set of codes. These would showcase the Claudia’s core features in a conceptual and modern representation, anchored by research of the original knit code.
The code adds a modernity to the visuals and is suggestive of precision, programming and craftsmanship. The rendering of the icons is strong, clear and feels confident.
The codes would be used in-conjunction with existing assets as a means of highlighting the design features, as well as creating a campaign identity that worked alongside a variety of existing creative.
